The battle of the Bulge was a frozen hell. Private Leo Barnes of the 101st Airborne had been wandering for hours, his feet numb, his hands bleeding. He had lost his squad in the chaos of the German assault. The snow was deep, the forest endless.

Then he saw lights-faint, yellow, flickering through the trees. He stumbled toward them, nearly collapsing at the door of a wooden building.

A sign read: Hôpital de la Paix. Hospital of Peace.

He pushed inside. The warmth hit him like a wave. Candles floated in mid-air, and the walls were lined with beds. But there were no patients. Only ghosts.

A nurse approached him. She wore a uniform from the Franco-Prussian War, her face young but her eyes ancient.

"You're wounded," she said. Her voice was soft, like wind through dry leaves.

Leo looked down. He hadn't noticed the blood soaking through his jacket. A piece of shrapnel was lodged in his side.

"Am I dead?" he asked.

The nurse smiled. "Not yet. But you will be, if you don't let me help."

She guided him to a bed. The sheets were cool and soft. As she removed the shrapnel, the pain vanished. Her hands glowed with a pale, golden light.

"Who are you?" he whispered.

She touched his forehead. "We are the ones who never made it home. We tend to the living so they don't join us too soon."

When he woke, he was lying in the snow. The hospital was gone. His wound was healed, leaving only a faint scar.

He stood, brushed off the frost, and walked toward the sound of distant artillery. His squad was waiting. The war was still burning.

But he carried the warmth of that strange hospital with him, all the way to Berlin-and home.
